JP van Son's Computer System System
IP Address: 66.189.210.17 Last Update: July 26, 2007 at 15:01:09
Amplifier: Pioneer SX-727
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): None
Speakers: Dynaco A-25 with DIY 10" ported subwoofer (powered)
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Winamp using FLAC primarily and the MAD plug-in for MP3s.
Sound Blaster Audigy (need to upgrade)
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: 12 gauge Sound King. Radio Shack Fusion interconnect.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Topaz Line 2 Laboratory Grade Power Conditioner -- An absolute must due to the line noise generated by the computer. Provides superior midrange clarity and, as the reviewers like to say, 'a dark velvety background against which the music is highlighted.'
Tweaks: Dynacos have been mirror-imaged.
Room Comments/Treatments: Listen nearfield so room effects are negligible
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Most everything and pretty much whatever comes up in random play from a large selection of FLACs I've ripped from my own purchased CDs.
System Goals/Comments: Musical system for casual listening that is non-fatiguing. Goals have been met.
System Strengths: Very, very non-fatiguing and very musical setup. Can listen to this setup for hours on end and it only seems to sound better. Near ruler flat (+/-0.3dB) response in my seating position from 25Hz to ~10kHz where the opamps in my mic preamp start dropping out -- spooky flat, but distortion does seem to be above average with the vintage gear.
System Weaknesses: Not the greatest in frequency extension nor low level detail and resolution. Also quite colored. That's what the main system is for.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Books & Literature, Music, Electronics, and casual science
