Amplifier: Manley-350 Designer's Reference series monoblocks (350 wpc tube monoblocks)
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Conrad Johnson PFR (remote controlled solid state line stage preamplifier)
Speakers: Infinity Rennaisance-90 (an original Arnie Nudell design); 75-400 watts power handling; Frequency Resp: 27hz to 45khz; sensitivity: 87dB; 4ohms nominal capable of dropping down to 2ohms. 4 driver complement-1 EMIT tweeter; 1 EMIM Midrange driver; 1 6" mid-bass coupler, 1 10" dual voice coil watkins low bass driver
overall: requires very stable amp that can deliver good current source to drive this speaker to full potential; maximum watts is not necessary, as long as current is abundantly available. for example a 70 watt tube amp can drive both speakers well, but with limited output, however with very satisfying musicality. therefore it depends on what you want. the more power the better, but also the current. for example, driving these speakers with a 200 watt Forte, and Threshold caused the amps to shut down. but driving these with a little conrad johnson premier 11A (70 watt tube amp) and a pair of Manley 350 monoblocks, the speakers sing!
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Conrad Johnson DV2B (vacuum tube CD player)
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: speaker cables: Cardas quadlink series 5; Interconnects: Nordost Red Dawn connection from cd player to preamp, and Nordost Blue heaven connection from preamp to monoblocks.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): power conditioner none; audio rack: Bellogetti-four shelve (adjustable steel perforated rack, bought in the USA)
Room Size (LxWxH): 30 ft x 15 ft x 12 ft
Room Comments/Treatments: room had series of french windows at rear that allowed for unwanted bass reverbs to remain, therefore when opened, these loose waves of unwanted reflections would filter out and leave just smooth seamless sound stage.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Jazz, instrumental: Bob James and quartet, Stan Getz, Ray Brown, Norman Brown, George Benson and the like.
Jazz vocal: Diana Krall, Casendra Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Eva Cassidy etc.
System Goals/Comments: to reproduce live events as close as possible on playback. a true audiophile source
System Strengths: sound stage: open, airey and transparent, vocals are projected in true 3D effect, wide soundstage and uncluttered. true life like scale of events unfold, and very musically satisfying to the point of where musical emotions take place. Previous speakers used with same components: Magneplanars MG3.5R ; very good speakers, open airey, very transparent, all of the above qualities, but lacked bass and slam of what infinities can produce, especially the Rennaisance 90. also MG3.5R had to replace tweeters after 3 years of usage, including plate fuses after sometime. replacing ribbon is not easy and is a very tedious process, therefore sold this pair in May 2005, and purchased the Infinities in June. 2005
System Weaknesses: needs very large space to sound right. if doors are closed and curtains drawn, boomey sound lessens, however not as clear and transparent as when windows are opened to a certain degree.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Former Marketing Manager, Canon office automation products (printer, fax, and scanner division)
Currently in Australia: completing Masters Degree in Business (Strategic Marketinng)
