James Melhuish's constantly evolving System
Last Update: June 28, 2002 at 07:17:36 IP Address:
Amplifier: Jack Elliano design home built 46 direct coupled amp.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Currently a Gary Kaufman 5687 tube preamp. Coming soon: Jack Elliano Ultrapath 6J5 (Ultrapath preamp) - DIY using Electraprint transformers.
Speakers: Hammer Dynamics Super12 wide-band 12 inch drivers with supertweeters. Review at EnjoytheMusic.
Radio Shack 40-1297C full range drivers in trash-find cabinets (office system).
CD Player/DAC: main system Denon DCD 2560, office system Sony CDP350
Turntable/Phono Stage: Oracle Delphi upgraded to Mk V (except platter and bearing). Turbo power supply. Origin Live Rega RB250 tonearm with structural mods. Shelter 501 moving coil cartridge. Cardas tonearm rewire direct from cartridge pins to phono plugs. Lehmann Audio Black Cube.
Other Source(s): Luxman receiver for tuner.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: John Wyckoff Litz cable, solid copper core 30 AWG with silver plate and teflon insulation. DH Labs Silver Sonic interconnects and simple solid wire 30 AWG interconnects.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): TNT Flexy rack.
Tweaks: Not much yet
Room Size (LxWxH): 17 x 14 x 10
Room Comments/Treatments: Behind listening couch is a large open arch to dining room. "Dead end". But near speakers is hard and "live". Creates bass reinforcement and skews the frequency response. No room treatments allowed. Ultracurve probable fix.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Varied: rock, blues, jazz, early classical (Baroque, choral, etc.), reggae, folk, world music especially North Indian classical.
System Goals/Comments: Working on the next big step to high quality: tube preamp.
System Strengths: With the new 46 amp, system is much better. Very revealing, beautiful tone.
System Weaknesses: Still problems with room interactions in the bass region. Very live room near speakers. May get a Behringer Ultracurve to handle room interactions.
Video/HT System: None
