Panelhead's Panelhead's Main System System
IP Address: 99.101.233.225 Last Update: February 19, 2019 at 17:34:17
Amplifier: Built into speakers. Stock factory tri-amped. Also built in subwoofer. Active four way, 500 watts/channel. All discrete.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Using KRK Ergo to control system output. It splits to drive the sub and feed the high pass filtered signal to the active speakers. Have a switchbox to select which analog goes into the Ergo.
Speakers: Three way Blue Sky SAT 8 monitors. Active, each driver has a 100 watt discrete amplifier. Acoustic suspension, 8", 4", and 1" drivers crossed at 300 and 3K. Blue Sky SUB 12, 12 sealed box with 200 watt amp crossed at 60 hz. Sub and woofer of monitors blended by Ergo. Uses the Lyngdorf Room Perfect software and hardware.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: KRK Ergo as main playback. Also Apogee Duet, TC Impact Twin, Marantz SA-8260, and Sony DVP-S9000ES.
Turntable/Phono Stage: Technics SL-1200 Mk II, outer record clamp, rewired arm, Denon DL-103R, using a Pass Labs Pearl with integral MC stage, a Borbely 419 phono, an Ono clone, and a Phono clone.
Other Source(s): Mac Mini, 2.5 Ghz i5, 8 gig RAM, Force 3 SSD.
A Sangean HD tuner with digital out feeds coax into the dac. The resulting sound is good.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Gotham GAC-4 to monitors, silver plugs. Canare Star Quad to sub. Single ended cabling is XLO 26 ga in cotton sleeving with Eichmann Bullitt Plugs.
The power cords are all high quality, with ferrite dampening and shielded.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): A VPI 16.5 is used to remove the Disc Doctor fluid and rinse water from every lp that comes in.
No pwer conditioning used. Most componets have a seperate power supply, with discrete regs, 4 pole caps, and chokes installed. Maybe the disc player, turntable power unit, and tuner might benefit some. But the amps, preamps, and phono stages are overbuilt.
Tweaks: This is a moving target. The componets used is constantly evolving. Currently using almost all Dale RN55 E tempco rsistors. Still use surplus S102 when close values of Dale are not available.
Caps are Panasonic FM, Rubycon ZLH,ZLG, or Silmic II. Depends on availability.
Bypass caps across all large electrolytics, and a sub ohm value resistor in series with the bypass cap to damp ringing.
Thinking on decoupling has evolved. Now use small caps close to circuits, 22 ufd or less to provide quick demand. Large caps close to rectifiers.
Room Size (LxWxH): 22 x 22 x 8
Room Comments/Treatments: Room is a loft area, opens on two sides to downstairs to let the pressure out. All wood floors.
One side is all lps, the other side is a large two story area with tapered ceiling.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Love old country, George Jones, Merle, also Texas new country, Joe Ely, Shawn Colvin, Jimmy Dale, Hank Jr, Lucinda, Emmylou, David Allen Coe, Wayne the train, and too many other to list.
FM is 60% of total listening. Good local stations and listen to what is available when traveling.
Also enjoy classical, and listen more in car and live. Usually listen to live music performances every week.
System Goals/Comments: Live sound, realistic reproduction.
System Strengths: The active speakers deliver great clarity and scary dynamics. I think now that is what I liked about Lowthers, lack of passive crossovers to muck up the sonics.
System Weaknesses: Live radio feeds show the need for high pass filtering. Bumping the mic causes the sub to almost move across the floor. Dynamics are too linear. Some compression needed to limit mistakes.
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: Who cares!
Comments on HT System: For the wife and kids. Now have high def and a fair audio system connected to it.
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Outdoor activities/only audio/sales manager/service coordinator
