funkwrench's cheap, dirty, gently evolving main system System
Last Update: June 05, 2002 at 12:07:26 IP Address: 209.163.96.202
Amplifier: 2 restored 1950 Radio Craftsmen, Craftsmen-2 monoblocks (not to be confused with older RC-2 paraphased drivered units). Contact me for some original Craftsmen schematics and litterature.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Foreplay hardware in non-standard grounded cathode / current source configuration (aka mu follower--NOT srpp). Uses tube current source--not CS4s.
Speakers: All vintage: Main speaks: Electrovoice Aristocrat horn cabinets with University 6201 drivers. also dynaco, KLH, Advent, Epicure...whatever I find in the dumpster. Contact me for re-edging advice! If you need info on the University 6201, I have some stuff. If you have any good info on the Klipsch Electrovoice Aristocrat, please contact me. Thanks.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: junkers: dennon, mostly. no dac. Lately a bottom feeder's Sony discman. EATS batteries.
Turntable/Phono Stage: Please write me if you know how to get a Denon 103-S re-tipped.

Fully restored Fisher 400 receiver for most vinyl listening. Turntables: kenwood 500 w/Grace tonearm, grado cart. AR stock table/Grado Cart.

Other Source(s): Kenwood 7500 tuner, $20 on ebay. sweet. Got tired of poor sensitivity of my Fisher 400. Don't have the skill to re-allign it.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Cat 5--homemade, single set (8 stranded? no braided sets). very happy with these simple cables. Interconnects are mostly gold plated ratshax junk and, since I do so much building, modifying and farting around, ratshak roach-clip jumper cables.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): you must be joking.
Tweaks: everything. MY ONLY ADVICE: make sure that every component that you love is protected by a fuse. I have seen the smoke and I have wept the tears.
Room Size (LxWxH): x x 5'7
Room Comments/Treatments: I live in a gutted 150 year old rowhouse in a "working class" neighborhood of Baltimore. I am thankful for indoor plumbing and the occasional visitor.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): no specific genres. Whatever's good. Music snob. Audiophiles generally have the WORST taste in music, don't you think? And what's up with all this skipping from track to track to audition the "good parts". If you fit the profile of one who cannot listen to an album or a cd from beginning to end, well friend, you need to see a doctor.
System Goals/Comments: Build quiet, simple phono stage. Doc B, Joseph Esmilla and Walter D'Ascenzo are my heroes. That guy with the DARLING amps, too. HiFi Tom's metalwork has me stunned and bleeding from the ears with envy.
System Strengths: All-tube amplification: quiet, sweet and utterly listenable. Very high quality to price ratio--in my opinion.
System Weaknesses: tonearm/cart setup is weak. Lack ability, patience, experience to tweak setup parameters.
Video/HT System: None
TV/Projector: I do not own a television. Nor do I rent one.

Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Womens\\\' Lacrosse. No professional sports-- NEVER. Occupation: PeopleSoft wonk/skeptic. Currently unemployed. I don\\\'t know much but I know this: The obscure Tanqueray Malaca gin makes the best martinis.

BTW: I am NOT a tube dealer but I have
