pcanis@earthlink.net's pcanis simple system System
Last Update: November 03, 2000 at 19:03:19 IP Address: 38.27.177.246
Amplifier: Balanced Audio Technology's VK-500. Power amp baby, ya
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): none
Speakers: Snell Type D's 3-way moderately very nice speakers.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Theta Miles, using built-in analogue volume to drive BAT
Turntable/Phono Stage: Well, I got a Thorens sitting there, waiting for when I can afford a preamp
Other Source(s): NAD tuner, Onkyo cassette deck, Akai Reel-to-reel/8-track combo unit ; All waiting for preamp.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Audioquest crystal or Goertz Mi-2's for speaker. Cardas 300b, MIT T-2's, DH Labs BL-1's for interconnects, depending on my moods.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Volex AC cords. Plugged into wall, but nothing else on that circuit, and it is the only grounded outlet in the house cept for 220 circuits.
Tweaks: hmmm, ya know, i've experimented. They just make me nervous.
Room Size (LxWxH): 16 x 13 x 8
Room Comments/Treatments: Room opens out through 9 foot opening into kitchen dining room area. Lots of open space around equipment. Heavy curtains with lots of folds behind speakers, able to open and close them for either "STADIUM" or "SMALL CLUB" settings P carpeting, record shelves, cd shelves, lots of plants too. TV room is on sunporch :) So only one chair in this our "living room"
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Big ol' Classical collection, seem to really love Schubert. Bruckner for when the dogs come out. Also lots of electronica and funk and alt rock. So, favorite artists list might read: Schubert, Beethoven, Bruckner, Aphex Twin, P-Funk, and Hole's second album. Ya know, I know some of it is so so good, but I reallyhave never developed a taste for jazz or blues. Love Sinatra tho, jeez. he is a reference voice for me. (ps, I'm not some old dude, hehe)
System Goals/Comments: Well, sure as hell would be nice to get a pre-amp!! Significant other has threatened me with sure and painful death if i get another hi-fi item this year P
System Strengths: Pretty damn open sounding because of its simplicity and the relatively open space it sets in. I listen kinda nearfield, but everythign is out in middle of room - speakers and chair that is. Plus, I really think I am getting into getting timbre and tonal balance right. Listen to a lot of voice and piano, so that is important to me. IOW, soundstaging and such are great, but I focus first on the tonal rightness of my system.
System Weaknesses: Someday, I will audition electrostatics, and I will love them. Well, maybe. I listen at low to moderate listening levels, except, of course when its Bruckner or P-Funk night. I keep coming back to this same thing whenever i go to stereo stores: I like big powerful amps and speakers at low to moderate levels. So, someday -- bigger speakers! Wall of Sound! Circa 1974! (hehe, old deadhead)
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: record and cd collectring, scouring thrift stores for lp's, astronomy, everquest.
